About the Film

Disco’s Revenge is a deep dive into the soul of the disco movement.

The story of disco like you’ve never heard before. Executive produced by the legendary Nile Rodgers (Chic), this feature-length documentary explores the revolutionary music, community and dance culture that reshaped our world.

We want to set the record straight:
Disco. Never. Died.

For too long, disco has been dismissed as mere kitsch —a blur of glitter, drugs, and John Travolta’s swagger. But behind the stereotypes lies a defiant movement born in the margins of the civil rights era, feminism, and the queer liberation of Stonewall. Disco became a valued sanctuary for Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ communities, offering freedom, unity, and joy on the dancefloor.

Though the mainstream co-opted and exploited disco, its pulsing heartbeat never stopped. When backlash came—culminating in events like 1979’s Disco Demolition Night—it retreated underground, where it fueled and evolved into new genres including house, techno, hip-hop, and EDM, spanning global music scenes in Detroit, UK, Berlin, Chicago, and beyond. Today, its legacy inspires modern icons like Beyoncé, Daft Punk, and countless others who channel disco’s radical spirit.

From the teams that brought you Moonage Daydream and Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Disco’s Revenge tells the story of a cultural phenomenon that’s as relevant now as ever. Featuring the voices of those who lived it, loved it, and found themselves in its dazzling embrace, this documentary asks two vital questions: Why does disco matter? And in these divisive times, why does it matter more than ever?
